Text reads: Our heroes are made of the same stuff and dreams that make us all. They have been called upon to do extraordinary things. Some have given their lives. They have always worked for the people, and do still—for an end to hatred and poverty, for a place where respect is freely given and honor earned, for an Earth where all children can grow up healthy and whole.

Lies My Teacher Told Me About Christopher Columbus (Poster and Booklet) | Zinn Education Project: Teaching People's History

In Lies My Teacher Told Me About Christopher Columbus, the bestselling author of Lies My Teacher Told Me offers a graphic corrective to the Columbus story told in so many American classrooms. First published over fifteen years ago and long out of print, the poster and accompanying paperback book sum up the mis-tellings — and reveal the real story — in a graphically appealing and accessible format.

The poster juxtaposes short quotes from a range of high school textbooks currently in use, with excerpts from primary sources that clearly show how textbooks have “lied” by knowingly substituting crowd-pleasing myths for grim and gruesome historical evidence.

Lies My Teacher Told Me About Christopher Columbus (Poster and Booklet) | Zinn Education Project: Teaching People's HistoryIn fact, these textbooks intentionally omitted every important detail that we do know about Columbus’s fateful voyage to the Americas. Among countless other facts, Loewen demonstrates that Columbus and his men were far from the first to set foot in the “New World,” and that the peoples he encountered there did not submit to the “godlike” authority of him and his crewmen, but rather to the deadly forms of smallpox and bubonic plague they brought with them from Europe.

petersprojectmapThe 2006 edition of the Peters Map adds an explanation of the Mercator map, thumbnails of other maps, a web references list, features brighter colors, and upgraded paper stock.

The map shows continents according to their relative size. Traditional maps make lands near the equator look smaller than they really are — for example, South America appears smaller than Europe, when it is really more than twice Europe’s size.

Visual representation of the distribution of wealth in the United States.

Generations of teachers, union organizers, and activists have relied on this book-and-poster set, originally published in 1979, to illustrate the magnitude of America’s economic divide — which has only grown ever since. This completely updated edition, drawn from the 2005 Current Population Survey of the U.S. Census, brings together fresh primary data to provide a clear — and “eye-opening” (Chicago Tribune) — picture of the U.S. social structure.

Folded inside the companion booklet, the poster depicts color-coded figures that make it possible to compare social groups at a glance and to understand how income distribution relates to race, sex, education, and occupation. With charts and careful explanations, the booklet shows how to make the most of the poster in the classroom and beyond, and reveals the considerable changes in America’s social landscape over the last few decades.

Rose’s latest findings reveal that recent economic growth has mostly benefited the wealthiest households, that the term “middle class” has lost most of its meaning, that a gender gap persists in the workplace, and that, on average, African Americans and Latinos still earn far less than other Americans. Bringing to life the dry statistics underpinning our discussions of inequality, Social Stratification in the United States is, in the words of Barbara Ehrenreich, “a unique achievement.” [Publisher’s description.]

whatsupThis south-at-the-top map is a great educational tool. It challenges basic notions of ”up” and ”down.” True ”up” from our standpoint on the earth, is away from the center, and the earth in space has no inherent up or down. To emphasize this point, this map includes an inset, which shows global views from various angles. In addition, other inset maps show examples of a variety of projections with notes on their merits and limitations.
